Which decade in music do you think was the best? Personally, though I was born in 1983, I love 60's music in English (as opposed to Greek). I think it was the most creative decade and had amazing sounds. The genres were varied, the singers/writers were original and there was enough going on musically to satisfy everyone, from the conservative to the liberal. I like 50's and 70's too, but they give me a different feel. I have a lot of vinyl, not for it's value but because I love the stuff. In Greek, I love mostly 30's and 40's rebetika (a specific type of music). The 30's was heavier and uncensored and a wonderful decade for the genre, while the 40's, partly due to censorship and partly to war, was lighter and started to get popularized.
i like the last deckade. 2000 to 2009.
the 90's were very on and off, and i'm struggling to think of a good band that came out of them.
love the 70's and 80's, loads of good songs in those deckades.
can't stand anything recorded before 1960.
I'm definitely a 90s man, grew up on Britpop, grunge and other alternative stuff, Suede, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Radiohead, Massive Attack and Smashing Pumpkins, to name but a few of my fav bands, who all came into their own in the 90s, even if some were formed earlier.
Like music all the way from classical era till 2009 though, grew up with my dad´s record collection from the 60s and 70s, 80s is always funny, a bit unfashionable but definitely a guilty pleasure.
This is not an easy question. Every decade is full of good and awful music. But yeah, I keep going back to the Sixties, and the thing is, I was born in 1965 so I was pretty much too little to enjoy a lot of the music to the fullness I do now. Besides, it's just hard for me to be nostalgic about things like disco and hair metal. A lot of the music I like seems to have been made in the later part of the decade, probably starting in 1964 onward. We had a lot of bands and artists who did things with pop and rock music that just weren't done before, which can make things interesting.
60's and 70's for me. Lots of authenticity and a wide variety of genres. 80's are ok and 90's too. Not at all a fan of music from 2000 onward.
Even though reality TV killed the Christmas charts until 2009, with the worst one being 2002, and even though urban genres moved closer together, I think the last decade was the best in music because of the variety of music one could access. There are a lot of musicians making good music who don't attract enough publicity to become popular. That has always been the case, but it is easier to find their music than it has ever been before. The variety of music people made in the norties, especially in the latter third was greater than in previous decades.
90's all the way for me! :)
Well, I think the answers to the question have dispelled a misconception on my part. I always thought that we would think of the decade in which we "came of age" as what we would consider the "best." I grew up in the 70's, and gravitate toward that decade and the 80's. I have to agree that each decade had its winners and loosers, though.
Interesting topic.

I loved the 70's disco, southern rock and just good songs. I think the 80's were good to. Just my thoughts.
Definately the 90's with grunge and alternative but even the rap and pop stuff was better then than what came after it for the most part. And I think we all have a guilty pleasure in the 80's in one way or another. lol
I think it's either the 20s, or the 60s.
The 20s because jazz was pritty much in it's infancy, and that early jazz sound is really unique and wonderful. Pluss blues was starting to be recorded and noted, and the 60s because of all the many styles that started out then. Reggae, prog rock, psychedelia etc.
Tiff, if you have any of that greek stuff on 78s you are sitting on an absolute goldmine, btw.
The 60's are absolutely the best. I only wish I had grown up during that time period, because a lot of the music represents freedom and revolution on a level we don't experience today. As I like to put it, "the 60's were an age of expression. Today is the age of suppression." No matter what, there was something for everyone in the60's. Of course that's true with all decades, but with all the stylistic changes in music in that particular decade, it's hard not to say that it was on a level that can never be achieved again. I just am fascinated with the 60's in general from the music to the culture to the complete lack of inhibitions people seemed to feel in that time.
